2001
December
Activity: Wendy Krickovic & Barbara Steverson presented a workshop at the Denver NSDC Conference. They realized there was a need for a Virginia Affiliate of the organization and asked questions about the process of starting an affiliate.
Comments: No affiliate holding reception for the Virginia members, but members from Virginia were invited to attend the Ohio/Maryland reception.
2002
November
Activity: Wendy & Barbara held an interest meeting for membership in a Virginia Affiliate of NSDC. Six attendees discussed the criteria for an affiliate and decided it was feasible to proceed with seeking affiliate status.
Comments: Six attendees (W&M, UVA, Richmond Public Schools, Fairfax County Public Schools, and Henrico County Public Schools were represented).

December
Activity: Wendy & Barbara attended the Affiliate Meeting in Boston, MA at the National Conference.
Comments: They gathered info regarding steps to affiliation and talked with Marti Richardson (incoming president), Mike Murphy (programs director), Stephanie Hirsh (deputy executive director), and Carole Schmidt (past president).
Activity: In Boston, held an affiliate interest meeting/reception for Virginia NSDC members to determine the membership base and potential for statewide participation.
Comments: 30 attendees from across the state of Virginia signed in.
2003
January
Activity: Held second meeting to share info and start the organization process. Decided upon a name for affiliate, the goal and mission (which mirror those of the National organization). The two benefits: web page (with newsletter as an added feature in the near future) and member database, showing member areas of expertise. Hardcopies and electronic copies of the member profile sheets are used for recruitment. Linda Thompson designed a member database.

Activity: Barbara Steverson traveled to Virginia Beach to speak to the Tidewater District Staff Development Group (Region 2) about efforts to start a Virginia Affiliate of NSDC.

Activity: Conference Planning Committee traveled to Charlottesville to see Zehmer Conference Center (on UVa Campus) and started conference plans.
Comments: Pam Roland and Nancy Iverson, VSDC members, have offices in this center and met to share information and ideas.

Activity: Barbara Steverson met with Valerie and Arlen Gregory to complete IRS paperwork. Valerie volunteered to serve as Treasurer.
Comments: Our non-profit, tax-exempt paperwork is in the pipeline.

July 17
Activity: Kathy Roed traveled to St. Louis, MO to represent VSDC at the National Affiliate Leaders' Meeting.

July 22
Activity: VSDC is officially incorporated.
Comments: Registered with State Corporation Commission.

Activity: State Meeting held in Fairfax, VA
  • $25 set as the state membership fee
  • $99 set as the state conference registration fee
Comments: 21 members attended this meeting, which followed a conference planning meeting. Kathy Roed reported on the National Affiliate Leaders' Meeting in St. Louis, MO.

Activity: Conference planning meeting held in Board Room of Spotsylvania County School Board.
  • Received our first registration from Pat Wiedel.
  • Selected official logo and planning committee decided to order shirts with VSDC logo.

July 17-19
Activity: Affiliate Leaders from across the country meet in Baltimore, MD to network and plan how to reach the NSDC Goal: All teachers in all schools will experience high quality professional learning as part of their daily work by 2007.
Comments: VSDC was represented by Barbara Steverson, President; Kathy Roed, President-Elect; and Linda Thompson, Secretary.
Activity: Plans were made with Stephanie Hirsh, Deputy Executive Director, to move forward with the NSDC Coaches Academy, funded by the Wachovia Foundation.
Comments: Stephanie met with affiliate leaders from FL, PA, GA, NC, and VA to further explain the grant and the training sessions to occur. The first session will be in Charlotte, NC in October.

July 23
Activity: State Meeting held at Blacksburg Middle School in Montgomery County. Martha Ann Stallings, Region 6 Representative and Fred Morton, Superintendent hosted the meeting and provided breakfast and lunch for the 15 attendees. After the morning learning experience and a buffet luncheon, a brief informational meeting was held to share info from Baltimore and to hear committee reports – especially info regarding the October conference. Brochures were distributed.
Comments: This was our first meeting at which a special time was set aside for a learning experience. Kathy Roed conducted an Open Space session around the topic of school-based professional developers. She also introduced and used an evaluation form which was shared at the Baltimore meeting.

Activity: Criteria and commitment documents sent to Regional Representatives to be used to recruit qualified coaches for the NSDC Coaches Academy.
Comments: Our Goal: 8 coaches (1 from each region) and 6 additional paid coaches, VSDC members, college staff, or DOE representative.

October 15
Activity: Second Annual State Conference held at the Hospitality House in Williamsburg, VA. The theme: Building Collective Capacity: Unmasking Our Potential. (245 participants) The 14 member coaching team was introduced to the participants and the president gave a brief overview of the Coaching Academy.
Comments: More than 250 participants attended this conference. Keynote speakers were Richard and Rebecca DuFour. They spoke on professional learning communities. The lunch keynote was Hayes Mizell, from NSDC, who spoke on No Child Left Behind and its implications.
Activity: The coaches held their first state meeting. The President used this meeting as an opportunity for members to bond before traveling together to Charlotte. Dinner was provided and a detailed information session was presented. All dates and times of meetings and training were given.
Comments: The coaching team members all became members of VSDC. Their content areas include reading, math, and computer technology.

October 23
Activity: Coaching team attended the first NSDC Coaches Academy Session. Dee Merrill, Wachovia Representative, welcomed the 5 state groups (70-80 coaches and state leaders). Sessions were conducted by Joellen Killion, Stephanie Hirsh, and Dennis Sparks. Karen Hayes, NSDC Board Member, also assisted Joellen.
Comments: Resources for this session included: NSDC Standards & Innovation Configurations. Another topic was communication skills. Group pictures were taken and plans made for our second national session in Miami, Florida. Our State Plan and Communication Plan were started and are to be updated as we move through the sessions.

November 17
Activity: Coaches held second state meeting in Stafford County to debrief and discuss the 1st national session topics & how new knowledge was being used.
Comments: Topics: Standards, reflective journals, interactive logs, support given in schools, meeting in Miami.

April 28
Activity: Third state meeting for coaches – Norfolk, VA Virginia Coaches met to discuss the Academy experience and how info learned and resources shared have helped them to become better coaches.

Activity: Third National Training Session for Coaches Virginia team hosted Academy participants at the Marriott Waterside-Norfolk, VA. Virginia Coaches were presented Certificates of Completion on 4/30/05.
